Applied Practice offers the following assessment and scoring options for English Language Arts teachers and students. Each assessment contains original, field-tested questions. Open response questions are evaluated by expert educators using a set of prescribed standards. Multiple-choice style questions are scored and analyzed using our nGaugeTM scoring platform, and detailed reports are delivered directly to teachers to guide preparation moving forward. Each exam mimics the style, format and expectations of the actual AP® exam.

Full length Mock Assessment
- Section 1: 45 multiple-choice questions
- Section 2: 3-free response questions: one synthesis, one rhetorical analysis, and one argument prompt.
Free Response Only Assessment
- Section 2: 3-free response questions: one synthesis, one rhetorical analysis, and one argument prompt.
Each teacher will receive access to the nGauge™ Teacher Dashboard to track student submissions and download reports. Standard reporting includes: Teacher Report with Potential AP® Score, Student Report Card, Multiple Choice Item Analysis, and Learning Objectives Reports. Reports also include each student's overall FRQ score as well as a breakdown of the scoring of each free response question based on the allocation of points in the rubric. The teacher will also receive access to the Multiple Choice Answer Key with Rationales and Student Samples with Scoring Commentary for each Free Response Question.
Teachers will receive access to video deconstruction of each free response question on the exam. In the videos, an expert teacher will provide an analysis of the question, as well as tips and strategies to help students improve their scores.

The Applied Practice benchmarks are a way for teachers to demonstrate to students the level of work expected in an AP® course and on the exam. They also give teachers a first look at students' timed writing responses. As with the Mock Exam, Benchmark responses are evaluated by expert educators.
Reporting that includes a breakdown of student strengths and weaknesses and suggestions for how to target certain areas is also provided. There are two Benchmarks for each course.
- Each Benchmark for AP® English Language includes 25 multiple-choice questions and one free response prompt.
- Each Benchmark for AP® English Literature includes 25 multiple-choice questions and one free response prompt.
Each teacher will receive access to the nGauge™ Teacher Dashboard to track student submissions and download reports. Standard reporting includes: Teacher Report, Student Report Card, Multiple Choice Item Analysis, and Learning Objectives Reports. The Applied Practice scoring service for 9th and 10th grade language arts students gives teachers actionable data on students' timed writing responses. These carefully constructed prompts are appropriate for students in Pre-AP®, honors, and advanced courses. As with the other Applied Practice scoring services, student responses are evaluated and scored by expert educators.
Reporting that includes a breakdown of student strengths and weaknesses, along with suggestions for how to target certain skills, is also provided. Three writing prompts are included for each grade level.
The 9th grade writing prompt package includes a rhetorical analysis, an argument, and a prose analysis. Prompts include excerpts from Antigone, The Catcher in the Rye, and Narrative in the Life of Frederick Douglas.
The 10th grade writing prompt package includes a rhetorical analysis, an argument, and an open question, which asks students to apply a prompt to an independent reading selection. Prompts include excerpts from “Self-Reliance,” “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” and “The Last Days of John Brown.”
Each teacher will receive access to the nGauge™ Teacher Dashboard to track student submissions and download reports. Standard reporting includes a Teacher Report with rubric breakdown and a Student Report with rubric breakdown and standardized comments. In addition, teachers will receive classroom activities, which can be used as pre-writing or follow up lessons to effectively deconstruct the prompts and passages.
