Reading for Meaning

July 29, 2020 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 pm CDT

In this session, participants will first understand how to help students build background knowledge by providing students informational and visual texts. Participants will also explore how the concrete elements of a text function together to create abstract meaning. Finally, participants will learn how to teach students to express their understanding of texts through creating text-dependent questions and participating in student-led discussions.

• There must be a minimum of 10 registrants for the session to be held.
• Materials and additional information will be emailed to participants using the email provided during registration.
• Cancellation requests and full refunds will be honored until July 20th. No refunds will be offered for cancellations past July 20th.

Registration Fee: $25

Recommended Audience: Grades 6-12

Presentation Leader: Justin Overacker

Justin is a zany and gregarious eleven-year-educator, who currently teaches sophomore English at Wossman High School, an inner-city, Title I school in northeast Louisiana. Mr. O, as his students call him, also serves his district as an ELA Content Leader, a Mentor Teacher, a Teacher Leader, and resident wordsmith aficionado. A lover of YA and realistic fiction, Justin adores the extracurricular professional fun required with his involvement with his state’s assessment committee and the International Literacy Association’s Adolescent Literacy Committee. Justin is a nominee for 2020 Louisiana State Teacher of the Year.
