SOL Reading and Core Skills Writing

SOL Reading resource guides offer teachers the opportunity to reinforce important skills while seamlessly integrating test preparation. Each guide includes reading practices in the SOL style and format with correlations to the both the Standards of Learning  and the Common Core State Standards. Core Skills Writing guides supplement our SOL resources with additional practice specific to writing and editing skills. Each writing guide includes correlations to the Common Core State Standards for all multiple-choice questions.

SOL Reading guides include:

  • 6 selected passages from the literary work, each followed by 10 multiple-choice questions
  • A thematically-related nonfiction piece, one alternative piece (such as a job application or instructional manual), and/or a visual/graphic, followed by 15 multiple-choice questions
  • Detailed answer explanations
  • Correlations to the SOL and Common Core State Standards for all multiple-choice questions
  • Charts for tracking student progress

SOL Reading practices were created to address the Reading Component of the Virginia Standards of Learning (vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension).

Core Writing resource guides include:

  • 6 student essays related to the literary work, followed by 10 multiple-choice editing questions for per essay
  • 7 essay prompts related to the literary work
  • Detailed answer explanations
  • Correlations to the Common Core State Standards for all multple-choice questions

Six major skills are addressed in these writing guides: sentence structure and clarity, usage, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and organization/transition.
